How Much Does a Custom Mural Cost in Atlanta?
In Atlanta, a professional custom mural typically costs around $25 to $40 per square foot. Smaller projects may start with a minimum fee of around $800 to $1,500.
More intricate designs, challenging walls, exterior projects, and large-scale commercial murals can push the price much higher.
But mural pricing does not work like ordering a pizza where you pick a size and get a fixed price.
The size matters. So does the design. So does the wall. So does whether I need to perform ladder acrobatics to reach it.

How Much Does a Custom Mural Cost in Atlanta?
For a professional, hand-painted mural in Atlanta, you can generally expect:
| Mural project | Typical cost |
| Small accent mural | $800-$1,500+ |
| Medium interior mural | $1,500-$5,000+ |
| Large commercial mural | $5,000-$10,000+ |
| Large exterior mural | $10,000-$20,000+ |
| Highly detailed or large-scale mural | $20,000+ |
These numbers give you a starting point, not a final quote.
Two walls with the same square footage can have completely different prices. A simple design with a few bold shapes takes much less time. A detailed jungle scene is a different story. Tiny leaves, characters, and approximately 700 little details can keep me painting for a while.
Current Atlanta pricing sources also put many professional mural projects around $25 to $40 or more per square foot.
Recent Atlanta-area projects show smaller residential and commercial murals landing at several different price points depending on the scope.
What Actually Affects the Cost of a Mural?
Square footage gives us a starting point. It does not tell the whole story. These are the biggest things I look at when pricing a mural.
1. The Size of the Wall
A bigger wall usually means more paint, more planning, and more time on the ladder.
A 100-square-foot accent wall might take a fraction of the time required for a 500-square-foot exterior wall.
However, a tiny mural can still carry a minimum project fee because I still need to design it, prep for it, travel to it, set up, paint it, and clean everything up afterward.
2. The Level of Detail
Simple shapes, large blocks of color, playful patterns, and clean lettering usually take less time than detailed illustrations, realistic portraits, complicated scenes, or designs packed with tiny elements.
Want a giant colorful flower? Fun.
Want a photorealistic tiger hiding inside a jungle full of tiny flowers, birds, butterflies, and three references to your childhood dog?
Also fun.
Just expect a different price.
3. The Wall Surface
Not every wall behaves nicely.
Drywall, brick, concrete, textured surfaces, and previously painted walls can all require different preparation and painting approaches.
A smooth interior wall usually gives me a very different starting point from an old exterior brick wall that has spent the last ten years fighting Atlanta weather.
If the wall needs cleaning, repairs, sanding, priming, or other prep before I can start painting, that work can affect the final cost.
4. Indoor vs. Outdoor Location
Exterior murals often require more planning.
Outdoor projects may need exterior-grade materials, protective finishes, additional surface preparation, and equipment to reach higher sections of the wall.
Access matters too. Suppose I can walk up to the wall with my paint and start working. Great. If I need a lift, special equipment, parking coordination, or restricted work hours, the project gets a little more complicated.
5. The Timeline
Need the mural finished next week because your grand opening is next Friday?
Tell me early.
A normal schedule gives me room for design, preparation, painting, and drying time.
A rushed project can require additional coordination when I need to fit the work around business hours, events, or other site restrictions.
How Do Mural Artists Calculate the Cost?
Artists usually price murals in one of a few ways. Some charge by square foot. Others use a flat project price. Some separate the design fee from the painting fee, while others include design work within the overall project price.
I prefer to look at the whole project rather than throw a number at you based on wall size alone.
For example, imagine two 200-square-foot walls.
- Wall A: Big colorful shapes and simple lettering.
- Wall B: A detailed illustrated scene with multiple characters, patterns, and tiny details.
Same wall size. Very different painting days. That is why I want to know what you are actually imagining before I give you a useful estimate.
How Can You Save Money on a Custom Mural?
You do not need to turn your mural into a giant spreadsheet exercise.
A few simple choices can help keep the project within budget:
Keep the design simpler. Bold shapes and larger elements usually require less painting time than highly detailed artwork.
Have the wall ready. A clean, usable wall gives us a better starting point.
Share your ideas early. The more clearly I understand what you want, the easier it becomes to plan the design.
Avoid major design changes late in the process. Once we approve a direction, changing the entire concept can add time and cost.
Give yourself enough time. A flexible schedule can make the project much easier to plan.
What Should You Ask a Mural Artist Before Hiring Them?
Before you hand someone a paintbrush and the keys to your wall, ask a few questions.
- How do you price murals?
- Does the quote include the design?
- How many design revisions do I get?
- Does the price include paint and materials?
- Does the wall need preparation?
- How long will the mural take?
- Do you paint both indoor and outdoor murals?
- Do you provide a protective finish?
- Have you painted a project similar to mine?
- What happens if the project takes longer than expected?
And please send photos of the wall.
Photos, rough dimensions, your location, and a few words about your idea can give an artist a much better starting point than “How much for a mural?”
Is a Custom Mural Worth the Cost?
That depends on what you want the wall to do.
If you just need something to cover an empty wall, paint or wallpaper might make more sense.
If you want the wall to become part of the experience, a mural can be a completely different thing.
It can make a café feel more like a destination. It can give a kid’s room its own little universe. It can make a storefront memorable. It can turn an ordinary corner into the place everyone wants to take a photo.
And, most importantly, it can make your space feel like yours.

How much does a 10×10 mural cost in Atlanta?
A 10×10-foot wall gives you 100 square feet of painting area. At a typical professional rate of $25 to $40 per square foot, the painting portion could land around $2,500 to $4,000. However, a minimum project fee, design complexity, wall preparation, and access can change the final quote.
How long does it take to paint a mural?
Many mural projects take a few days to about a week once painting begins. Larger, more detailed, or more complicated projects can take longer. Design development, wall preparation, drying time, weather, and site access can also affect the overall timeline.
Does an outdoor mural cost more than an indoor mural?
Outdoor murals may require additional surface preparation, weather-resistant materials, protective coatings, lifts, or other equipment. The wall’s height, surface, condition, and accessibility can also affect the final price.
How do I get an accurate mural quote?
Send the artist a photo of your wall, its approximate dimensions, your Atlanta location, and a quick description of what you have in mind. You do not need to have every detail figured out. That is what the conversation is for.
How Much Does a Commercial Mural Cost in Atlanta?
A commercial mural in Atlanta typically costs $1,500 to $20,000+, depending on the size, design, location, and complexity. Branding, detailed artwork, difficult access, and tight deadlines can also affect the final price.
